Black Polygons – ‘Agapanthe’ EP Review

05/02/2015 by Tom Roden

We’ll put our hands up and admit it right away; we’d never actually heard of Black Polygons until they were brought to our attention by Benin City when they unveiled their ‘Stay Positive’ demo last week. Turns out they’ve already produced two albums and an EP of their recognisable soundscapes, and they’re too cool to have a Facebook page. Well, who knew? ‘Agapanthe’ is the latest of these releases, a short ten minute EP of strange soundscapes that almost defy […]

Benin City X Black Polygons – ‘Stay Positive’ Review

26/01/2015 by Tom Roden

We never make much secret of our love of Benin City, and while we wait for them to finish up on their album they’ve been nice enough to make public a short collaborative demo to keep everyone interested. ‘Stay Positive’ is a short demo (under two minutes long) that is a collaboration with “one of [their] new fave bands” Black Polygons, who provide the instrumentation. And it works very well, in a style very typical of Benin City – the […]

Video: Benin City – ‘Bus’

30/06/2014 by Tom Roden

Please be aware that this video, and therefore this post, might be NSFW. We usually like writing words about the videos before we share them, but this time words fail us. We can’t quite figure out what it is we’ve just seen, or whether we’re more confused than disturbed. Benin City’s ‘Bus’ wins the award for most memorable new music video we’ve seen so far. Ever. The video is below. We’re going to go lie down and try to make […]

Benin City – ‘Midnight Malarky’ EP Review

24/06/2014 by Tom Roden

Get set for poetics, big tunes and energetic beats – Benin City have just released their new EP, ‘Midnight Malarky’. And it’s every bit as enjoyable as we hoped it would be. And it’s no secret that we’ve got quite a fondness for the band here. ‘Bus’ opens the album brilliantly – beginning with a simple riff accompanied solely by vocals, before the song’s big hook crashes in. And that hook is an absolutely irresistible musical Casanova, which forms a powerful […]

Benin City – ‘Bus’ Review

06/06/2014 by Tom Roden

Benin City have never disappointed us, and have always got a space reserved in our hearts. Which is actually more scary than reassuring, because the way of the universe suggests that sooner or later there’s a good chance Benin City will produce something which will break our hearts. But that sorry situation shows no signs of happening any time soon. In preparation for the release of their ‘Midnight Malarky’ EP on June 23 (we reviewed it here), the band premiered ‘Bus’ […]

Video: Benin City – ‘My Love’

05/06/2014 by Tom Roden

‘My Love’ is a great piece of emotionally-charged urban poetry from Benin City. Highly personal and dramatic, it’s less a song than a piece of poetry set to a powerful soundscape. It’s a great track, and the video accentuates the gritty urban aspect of the poetics – as well as the flurry of differing emotions and ideas that the track expresses and the artists believe make up the foundation of love. Ooh, arty.

Benin City – Wha Gwan Review

02/10/2013 by Tom Roden

Every once in a while, a track comes my way which I find so difficult to write about that I take a good few days working at it. This can be for a number of reasons, but it is very rare that it is because the track is absolutely unique in its sound. But the new single from electro three-piece Benin City, ‘Wha Gwan’, is one of those rare tracks. It is impossible to compare this track to anything else, […]
