Black Polygons – ‘Agapanthe’ EP Review

We’ll put our hands up and admit it right away; we’d never actually heard of Black Polygons until they were brought to our attention by Benin City when they unveiled their ‘Stay Positive’ demo last week. Turns out they’ve already produced two albums and an EP of their recognisable soundscapes, and they’re too cool to have a Facebook page. Well, who knew?

‘Agapanthe’ is the latest of these releases, a short ten minute EP of strange soundscapes that almost defy all labels with their amorphous style. It’s an odd mix of indie-shoegaze elements caged inside storms of lo-fi ambience, and it makes for a confusingly enjoyable ten minutes.

Luckily opening track ‘Agapanthe Part I’ is the instrumentation that was borrowed for Benin City’s ‘Stay Positive’, so with that familiarity we pressed on. ‘Agapanthe Part II’ is a more haunting rendition of the opening track which fades in and out like waves of perplexing darkness, which eventually crash into ‘Sisyphus’ – a standout track for its novel inclusion of vocals from Mount Weak.

But even with this track, the vocals are secondary – they frequently slip into the sea of synths, accentuating that Black Polygons are artists much more focused on the atmosphere and feeling of their music than ever making them lyrically dependent. Closing track ‘Ancolie’ offers a more upbeat piano to close, a type of light (albeit one still veiled in bass-heavy apocalyptic sound) at the end of a dark audio journey.

If you’re into experimental and unusually captivating music, ‘Agapanthe’ is a great way to introduce yourself to Black Polygons. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but experimentalism rarely is. Besides art is subjective, right?
