The Reminisce – ‘By Night’ Review

30/08/2014 by Tom Roden

The Reminisce’s new track is full of upbeat acousto-pop melodies and strong vocals, with the occasional input of a tambourine to add an element of percussion to the track. It’s a catchy track with hooks constructed into both the instrumentation and the vocal melody. And for some reason it reminds me of an upbeat acoustic version of ‘Machines’ by Biffy Clyro. Starting with a great filtered acoustic riff fade in, it isn’t long until the bass line comes in and […]

Parisian Youth Culture – ‘Basement’ Review

19/08/2014 by Tom Roden

Parisian Youth Culture’s indie-rock sound has reached a new level on ‘Basement’, their latest track and second single release. It’s a slice of catchy guitar-led music done right, delivered as an unlikely anthem that you WILL be singing by the end. Like Simon Neil fronting Two Door Cinema Club, this song has the makings of an indie hit with its aggressive-edged chorus vocals and smooth rhythm sections. It combines the hallmark elements of indie rock, but brings in enough of […]

The Come Down – ‘She Said’ Review

18/08/2014 by Tom Roden

Do you ever find yourself pining for the old Biffy Clyro? The original, pre-fame Biffy Clyro? Ever wish the band would do more ‘Justboy’ and less ‘Biblical’? Wish no more and find your fill with The Come Down. Their track ‘She Said’ fills the void with an aurally inviting alt-rock treat. Crunchy guitars and a hint of theramin makes for a song with a strong garage-punk feel that is engaging from start to finish. It’s got a rough-around-the-edges feel that […]

Allusondrugs – ‘Allusondrugs’ EP Review

20/07/2014 by Tom Roden

There’s a faint line between shoegaze and grunge, one that is walked by Allusondrugs. Their debut EP is released tomorrow (July 21), and it’s a powerful release that will turn heads and draw some attention to a band that are on the cusp of collapsing into a vacuum of fuzzy guitars and spacey vocals. The EP starts as it means to go on – with a shoegrunge powerhouse track in the form of ‘I’m Your Man’, with its driving drums and catchy […]

Video: Allusondrugs – ‘Nervous’

16/07/2014 by Tom Roden

We’ll lead in with this: we think that Allusondrugs might actually be on drugs. How else can you explain this video for ‘Nervous’? Nervous is a great post-grunge track, sounding equal parts Nirvana and Biffy Clyro while also having a slight indie tinge to it, and it has some great vocal deliveries. But the video? We’re pretty confused. We’re not sure how the two fit together, and we’re not sure what we’re watching sometimes. But hey, it’s music. It’s art. So […]

Jekyll – ‘Jekyll’ EP Review

26/06/2014 by Tom Roden

Jekyll’s self-titled EP is a powerful work of alt-rock, coated in the angst of grunge without sounding dated. It’s a pretty impressive release, and one that any alt-rock fan will enjoy. The EP’s opening is brilliant. First track ‘I Do What I Can’ has an explosive start, giving the feeling that the EP would have broke free of the pause button regardless of whether you hit play or not. And the track itself is massive, a huge uplifting piece that really gets […]

Jekyll – ‘I Do What I Can’ Review

17/06/2014 by Tom Roden

From the hit of the start button, ‘I Do What I Can’ comes straight in with muscular guitar riffs and a clear bass line. There’s no slow build, you’re just dropped straight into the song’s hook. Combining heavy beats with reverb-coated guitars, this song is very alt-rock. It simultaneously channels the rock edge of early Biffy Clyro and the melodic melancholy of Meat Is Murder-era Smiths, making for a hugely enjoyable track. Alongside this, with have a vocal style that is […]
