Video: Calgaris – ‘APLT’

01/09/2014 by Tom Roden

It’s not really a secret that we love Calgaris. And nothing highlights why we love the band as much as ‘APLT’, the first *proper* track on their latest EP ‘I’. It’s a fantastic indie-rock track, sounding like You Me At Six gone dance-rock. The video is a simple enough affair, simply showing cuts of the band performing the track – first individually and then together. It’s simple but effective, as it gets gradually more artistic and colourful as the video […]

Calgaris – ‘I’ EP Review

26/08/2014 by Tom Roden

I’m a bit of a sucker for bands that do things a little differently with their EP’s or albums. If a band is willing to put in that little bit more effort to make the release feel like more than just a collection of radio-ready songs, I believe that makes the distinction between fame-hungry upstarts and musicians who are respectful of the art. Calgaris are definitely the latter. Latest EP ‘I’ opens as grippingly bizarre as you could imagine. ‘Knots’ […]

Jekyll – ‘Jekyll’ EP Review

26/06/2014 by Tom Roden

Jekyll’s self-titled EP is a powerful work of alt-rock, coated in the angst of grunge without sounding dated. It’s a pretty impressive release, and one that any alt-rock fan will enjoy. The EP’s opening is brilliant. First track ‘I Do What I Can’ has an explosive start, giving the feeling that the EP would have broke free of the pause button regardless of whether you hit play or not. And the track itself is massive, a huge uplifting piece that really gets […]

Coasts – ‘Oceans’ Review

31/05/2014 by Tom Roden

Nothing riles me up like reading a band describe themselves as ’emo’. For me, ’emo’ is a branding given by closeminded music critics in the mid-noughties to post-punk/softcore-hardcore bands that were slightly too punk to be pop-punk. So when I see a band describe themselves as ’emo’, I see red. I gave Coasts a chance in spite of this, with their track ‘Oceans’. And I was so pleasantly surprised that I became annoyed at myself for jumping to conclusions. ‘Oceans’ is […]
