Suburban Radio Interview

05/07/2015 by Tom Roden

We’ve covered them plenty of times on the site, but who are Suburban Radio? Drummer Scott Seabridge talks about the band and what makes them special. Punk is dead. That’s the general theory spat around by many a music fan, whether they’re musical snobs or apathetic rebels. It’s hardly a false statement: since the original punk breakout of the 1970’s, every band with a slightly abrasive sound has been labelled and marketed as punk. And after a while, the pop […]

Suburban Radio – ‘Fields Of Athenry’ Review

18/06/2015 by Tom Roden

Punk meets Irish Folk, with powerful results For fans of: Sham 69; Social Distortion Putting a punk rock spin on an Irish folk song might not strike people as being the most obvious way to spend your time, but Suburban Radio’s newest single ‘Fields Of Athenry’ does just that. But of course, referring to Suburban Radio’s rendition as being punk rock is only half truthful. As the track opens it feels very Sham 69, but soon enough searing guitars spin […]

Suburban Radio – ‘We All Deserve To Be Free’ Review

24/01/2015 by Tom Roden

It feels like an eternity since we listened to Suburban Radio’s ‘Step Out’ EP and picked out the acoustic rendition ‘We All Deserve To Be Free’ as being the most intriguing moment, offering “a stripped tease” of something much bigger. It also feels like too long a time since we first got a glimpse of how the track would turn out live. Now, finally, Suburban Radio have come back with ‘…To Be Free’ in a full band format, and have […]

Dirty Money Album Launch @ Sugarmill, Stoke

08/09/2014 by Tom Roden

Live billings are a very tricky thing. You don’t want to have everybody in a very close-fitting genre, because it runs the risk of feeling like you’re at a Status Quo gig and everything melding into one cohesive sound. At the same time, you don’t want too much variation because it can confuse an audience. It’s tricky business. Dirty Money No. 5’s album launch show at The Sugarmill in Stoke (Saturday September 6 2014) played it risky in this regard. […]

Suburban Radio – ‘Step Out’ EP Review

02/09/2014 by Tom Roden

The spirit of the garage band is one that seems to get lost in the mass of bands emerging with high-production values and flawless recordings. Even emerging punk artists lose their essence to the idea that “if you don’t have good production, nobody will take notice“. In a refreshing change of pace, Suburban Radio’s ‘Step Out’ EP flies in the face of the overproduced ideology with a rough-edged recording style. It’s something as bold as this that can make or […]

Lymelight Festival 2014: Day Two Report

05/05/2014 by Tom Roden

After ending on a high note last night, Lymelight Festival plodded to a start with the disappointing folk sounds of Rain. Things picked up slightly with Holly Pender, whose gentle acoustic sound gathered the first audience of the day and made up for the less-than-satisfying start to the day. Covers band Baxter got the crowd ready for the first band of the day, The BlueYellows, whose breezy pop songs were characterised by simple piano sections and wah-heavy guitar. They went down well, and signalled […]
