Dirty Money Album Launch @ Sugarmill, Stoke

08/09/2014 by Tom Roden

Live billings are a very tricky thing. You don’t want to have everybody in a very close-fitting genre, because it runs the risk of feeling like you’re at a Status Quo gig and everything melding into one cohesive sound. At the same time, you don’t want too much variation because it can confuse an audience. It’s tricky business. Dirty Money No. 5’s album launch show at The Sugarmill in Stoke (Saturday September 6 2014) played it risky in this regard. […]

Moral Panics – ‘WLVS’ EP Review

12/05/2014 by Tom Roden

Moral Panics are a fantastic indie-rock band with a sound that will brighten up an dull day (which is just as well, because the band are based in the grey reaches of Stoke-on-Trent). And what’s more, their sound is undeniably infectious and easy to love. ‘WLVS’ is the latest EP from Moral Panics and it’s definitely a step in the right direction to getting noticed. It’s full of indie-rock textures that are woven with treble-rich guitar tones and punchy drums, with a […]

Lymelight Festival 2014: Day Three Report

06/05/2014 by Tom Roden

The final day of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Lymelight Festival 2014 brought with it a mixed bag of performances. While there was less musical variety on display than there was yesterday, every act did their best to provide entertainment for the audience. And most were successful at this. Brains For Breakfast was a fantastic opening act, with his catchy brand of acousto-pop gathering a crowd early on and being well-received – particularly closing track and latest single ‘Sway’. A good act, but one […]

Lymelight Festival 2014: Day Two Report

05/05/2014 by Tom Roden

After ending on a high note last night, Lymelight Festival plodded to a start with the disappointing folk sounds of Rain. Things picked up slightly with Holly Pender, whose gentle acoustic sound gathered the first audience of the day and made up for the less-than-satisfying start to the day. Covers band Baxter got the crowd ready for the first band of the day, The BlueYellows, whose breezy pop songs were characterised by simple piano sections and wah-heavy guitar. They went down well, and signalled […]
