Alex Vann – ‘Silhouettes And Pirouettes (Volume 4)’ Album Review

06/06/2014 by Tom Roden

‘Silhouettes And Pirouettes (Volume 4)’ is the fourth instalment in a project by musician and wordsmith Alex Vann, and this time around the tracks feature more instruments and vocal tracking than previously. So each track has more musical weight, making each song sound bigger and more memorable. But despite this bigger musical sound, it’s still a very personal experience. With most instrumentation still done by Vann, along with almost all lyrics penned by him, the album is the sound of somebody […]

Video: Courtly Love – ‘Mirage’

02/06/2014 by Tom Roden

It was only about a month ago that we first heard of Courtly Love, and it wasn’t long afterwards that we fell in love with the 60’s-tinged neo-psychedelia of the band. From the inviting opening guitars of ‘Mirage’ (review here), we were hooked and it carried us nicely to B-Side ‘For Your Love, I Get High’ (review here). Well Courtly Love have just unveiled their video for ‘Mirage’, and it’s just as bronze-tinted as we always imagined it would be (fun fact: we’re […]

Popobawa – ‘Appetite’ Review

21/05/2014 by Tom Roden

Humans are overrated. We’re lazy, we’re opinionated and we fart. We’re not the most appealing of creatures at the end of the day. Of course, all of these things are hideous exaggerations and I’m sure nobody reading this is any of these things (we love you, you beautiful people. Please don’t leave us!). But some of us are, and it’s realisations like this that drove Gosport outfit Popobawa to seek a less sentient rhythm section. Ah, the perks of technology. ‘Appetite’ is the latest […]

Courtly Love – ‘For Your Love, I Get High’ Review

02/05/2014 by Tom Roden

While ‘Mirage’ soars confidently in skies of swirling psychedelia, the single’s B-Side ‘For Your Love, I Get High’ plods along the ground like a lumbering psychedelic dinosaur. It’s a very insular sounding track, one that contrasts and compliments the A-Side single while also being powerful enough to stand on its own. Whereas ‘Mirage’ draws a lot of it’s vocal prowess from the duet style delivery, this track is delivered solely by Lana Del Rey-reminiscent female vocals. The vocals are definitely […]

Courtly Love – ‘Mirage’ Review

01/05/2014 by Tom Roden

Have you ever had one of those days where you just want to immerse yourself, and get lost, in music? Look no further than ‘Mirage’, the upcoming single by Courtly Love. A mesmerising blend of psychedelia and blues, ‘Mirage’ is an immersive experience that will captivate you and send you floating through a world of shakers and swirling guitars. The guitars sit somewhere between contemporary shoegaze-indie and vintage 60’s psychedelia, sounding equal parts The Horrors and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The vocals […]
