New single and video from Big Freedia is too brilliant for its own good.

 

There is something inherently cheesy and a bit cringey about Christmas songs. As such, a truly good contemporary Christmas song is one that channels the cheesiness with a healthy dose of self-awareness and an extra dose of fun ridiculousness.

That is exactly what makes Big Freedia‘s new Christmas single, Make It Jingle, the only track of 2016 that deserves to be a Christmas number one. While the idea of making a Christmas rap single is preposterous in itself, Big Freedia channels that perplexing contrasting into one of the most fun tracks ever recorded. Setting the usual hip hop and rap themes against the backdrop of the festive season works far better than you would imagine, and the song itself is composed in a way that makes it hypnotically enjoyable.

As for the video… well, it certainly completes the package. If this isn’t Christmas number one material, we don’t know what is.
