The Step’s latest video conjures late nineties musical images.
Remember in the late nineties/early noughties when music videos had a tendency to be overly dramatic and function almost as mini movies? Well, The Step certainly do and their video for new single Stay Awake captures that style perfectly, using all the tropes from cinematic beach performances and an underpinning love(?) story.
The track itself is equally dramatic, mixing indie pop melodies with heartfelt vocals and jangly guitars with just the right amount of overdrive to give a blistering tone. These sounds merge into a strong indie pop number that feels fit to fill stadiums and close festivals, which puts the band in an ideal situation for the rest of their career.
