Feel good wonk-pop straight from the Wirral

Hooton Tennis Club are a totally fun band, and this is evident in their sound. A swirl of carefree jangly guitars form the framework of their latest track ‘Kathleen Sat On The Arm Of Her Favourite Chair’.

If the title isn’t enough to get you interested, this track was recorded and produced by former The Coral man Bill Ryder Jones. And it’s easy to see why he took an interest in HTC’s brand of breezy wonk-pop: ‘Kathleen…’ captures a feel good vibe that most indie bands can only dream of, with just the right balance of off-key garage and pop sounds.

Lyrically, the song is fascinating because it doesn’t mention or refer to anybody called Kathleen, or her favourite chair. Who is Kathleen? What exactly is her favourite chair? Where did the title even come from? Maybe we’ll never know. It’s a breath of fresh air to find a band with a playful creativity to song titling, rather than settling for the standard ‘insert subject matter or keyword’ approach.

‘Kathleen…’ is released on Heavenly Records on July 7. You can stream it below.
