A funky electronic guide to relationships and love
Berlin trio Say Yes Dog have just dropped their latest track ‘Girlfriend’, and it’s a funky piece of organic electronic glory.
Sounding like Hot Chip with a European twist, ‘Girlfriend’ is synth heavy with a driving rhythm section that is intensely electronic. But through all this technological wonder, the vocals offer a spark of humanity to an otherwise cold mechanical sound.
The lyrics themselves juggle the complexities and contradictions of love: the self-confidence of being able to give what they need, countered with the vulnerability of asking for them to accept your love. This power struggle is captured perfectly in the lyrics, and the vocal deliveries further emphasise it. The strong verse delivery shows the confidence, while the chorus vocals are delivered in a more hushed tone: the frailty and weakness in the refrain’s request taking centre stage.
It’s a piece that is beautiful on many layers and enjoyable to listen to endlessly. And as it’s released ahead of Say Yes Dog’s debut album later this year, it’s sure to gather a lot of attention for the trio.
