It’s rare to find a piece of music that is so emotive and soulful that it can inexplicably bring forth a stream of emotions, so when you do find one it’s a moment worthy of noting. Kalandra’s ‘Rest Your Soul’ does just that.
The track begins gently, with soft guitar strums and subtle strings building a wall of ambience through which the vocals shine. And the music is fantastic throughout the track – it’s always the right mix of gripping and immersive. And there are so many subtle instrumental shifts that it makes this song worth listening to just for that – you’ll notice something new in the instrumentation with every listen. But there is more to this than just the glorious instruments – there is also the vocals.
There really isn’t enough that can be said about the vocals – Katrine Stenbekk’s versatile voice is stunningly powerful and absolutely beautiful, and couldn’t be better suited to the folk-rock of the track. This is especially evident on the pre-chorus lift of the song, where the vocals and bass line combine in such a way that it is impossible not to be blown back.
It’s a rare thing for a song to do everything right. But ‘Rest Your Soul’ manages it. Every rise; every fall; every soaring melody and subtle bass nuance – it’s all crafted to perfection and make this song a wonderful work of art. There is nothing to fault in this track.
You can listen to Kalandra here. You won’t regret it.
