Monad’s latest single provides a riotous romp through dreampop.
When you think of shoegaze indie or dreampop, you’ll generally think of something that flows smoothly and with all jagged roughness taken out. Well, it seems Monad didn’t get the memo, because his latest single is an abrasive take on the dreamy genre.
Combining blissful indie guitar tones with chaotic, hard drum rhythms that shatter the peace, Turning Wheels offers up an unusual combination of sounds that somehow works. Mixed into this are Monad’s vocals, which toe a similar line between smooth and coarse, which complements the cacophony of sound escalating out of control in the background.
By 3:30, everything has started to collapse into a chaotic instrumental that engulfs in a way that spacious guitars alone never could; proving that the roughness has a place.
