Debut single from Malena Zavala is bleak yet optimistic.
It’s rare that an artist will use their debut release to make themselves sound begrudgingly resigned to optimism, but that’s just what Malena Zavala has done with Should I Try.
The track, which lays a blanket of dreampop guitars atop a minimalistic clicktrack and basic beat rhythm section, offers up a very unusual take on optimism and willing yourself to do something. It’s an ideal soundtrack to dizzying uncertainty and one that leads us to question whether it serves as a note to self from an artist at the very start of her musical career.
This is very possible given Zavala’s own words on the track: “Should I Try is a song about fearing the future, and the anxiety that comes with potentially setting yourself up for failure, but then realising that you need to relax. It’s not that bad, things will work out.”
