Say what you want about the 80s, the electronic sounds of the era are iconic and excellent. After all, there’s got to be some reason why so many modern electropop artists give nods to it.

Take Anoraak, for example. The electropop artist’s new single Outcome is a modern gem with a glassy 80s heart. Relentlessly bubbling synths combine with a hypnotic, oddly polyphonic background hook for a modern feel, and it’s even fitted into a modern electronic structure — subdued verses, stabby pre-chorus and a big choral drop.

But the song is distinct due to its retro influence. There are synth blasts and ascending melodies that just scream 80s electro, with a strikingly deep vocal contrast. Think Depeche Mode, or Krychek. Either way, it’s a perfect slice of past meets present that keeps you hanging on for more — again and again and again.
