A song to welcome Winter

Mat Hunsley’s latest single is a sombre way to welcome Winter.

Whether it’s because of Bonfire night or broken heating, there’s a strong connection between the imagery of fires and late Autumn/Fall months giving way to Winter. It seems that nobody understands this connection quite like Mat Hunsley, whose latest offering Fires is the perfect soundtrack to shorter days.

Sombre sounding acoustic guitars are the main attraction of the song itself. Fires follows the very familiar acousto-pop formula of melancholy picking patterns and a strong yet tenderly emotive vocal, progressing to a grand build of strings. In this regard, it’s nothing exceptional. But in its delivery, the track brings so much more than a tried and tested style – mostly an infectious sense of melody, a big chorus and a musical climax that is larger than life and second to none. As the days get shorter and the light fades sooner, you could ask for no better company than Mat Hunsley.
