New single The Gambler is an alt-folk track of acquired taste.
The Amber Bugs are one of those bands who clearly have a wealth of talent but produce music that is of an acquired taste. Their new single, The Gambler, is a strong example of this: a rousing alt-rock track with strong folk aspects but one packed with certain tonalities that are at odds with the rest of the scene.
The track itself is interesting, blending raw-edged alt-folk guitar work with a phenomenally string-led climax that is engulfing and captivating. However, the band’s sound in general is firmly against the grain. Typically, bands playing with the alt-folk sound are clean-cut with high production values and not a sense of unrefinement or rawness about them. By comparison, The Amber Bugs are untidy and raw. Yet many will find that an endearing quality, offering a sense of genuinity and excitement to their sound.
