A dramatic outburst of dance-pop power.
17-year-old Ella Sanoo has just dropped her first single Leave This Town and its accompanying video, and it is possibly the most dramatic debut of all time.
Shot entirely in greyscale, any discerning viewer would get the impression that this is supposed to be emotionally weighty and dramatic. You wouldn’t be wrong, and it does surprisingly well. It’s obvious that it was filmed on a fairly strict budget but it manages to convey its due emotional baggage. It gets across its sense of hopeless dread and isolation.
That’s largely helped by the song itself though, which is as angst-ridden as you can get when accompanied by jittering synths and orchestral rushes. Put on top of this that Ella herself has a beautiful vocal, which is youthful and fascinatingly unique. It’s a voice that is strikingly recognisable and unforgettable.
