Experimental Art-Pop patchwork
Not an official release but it may as well be: Tina Hanae-Miller’s demo for track ‘We Don’t Own Our Dreams’ (dubbed as the “super rough student version”) is some amazing experimental art-pop worth listening to.
The track has a very weird vibe to it, for a number of reasons and almost none of them are bad. The first listen may be the most striking musical experience we’ve had in a while, because of it’s absolute disregard for traditional musical form. ‘We Don’t Own Our Dreams’ feels like two different songs, entangled together in a way that vaguely makes sense.
This, I suppose, would be the biggest (perhaps only) failing of the track. It feels oddly patchwork, and the vague sense of continuity doesn’t quite save it. But, at the same time, this is what gives the track its eccentric and experimental charm. It conjures a confusion of conflicting emotions, while also producing a vibe that you’re gradually feeling the effects of a pill you took earlier.
Despite this odd feeling that we can’t quite wrap our heads around, Tina displays a phenomenal strength of vocal – it’s absolutely breathtaking. This track displays her vocals in a cross-section of deliveries, from soaring to sultry while still feeling like she’s only just scratching the surface of her abilities.
If you go into this track for a coherent listen by the standards of mainstream and/or pop music, this might not be for you. You may get parts of it. You may even enjoy parts of it. But this track is the budding form of a musical artform, yet to bloom but still of a unique and niche appeal. Only those seeking music as a form of art will truly appreciate it.
What is apparent, despite this experimental artistry, is that Tina – aside from having a powerful voice – has a good sense of melody and is capable of producing pop, should she so desire. Luckily, she’s adventuring down the path seldom taken in modern music: of genuine experimentalism. That’s what makes her worth listening to.
