Pacific – ‘What Are You Waiting For?’ EP

An indie-pop masterclass of pacing and anthemia

It’s probably a hard sell to describe Pacific’s latest EP as sounding like indie-alternative with a heart of glam rock. Likewise it’s not especially wise to draw any sound comparisons to an energised Coldplay. But those are the closest ways of describing ‘What Are You Waiting For?’ with any sense of specifity.

‘What Are You Waiting For?’ is a solid EP, enjoyable and energised from start to finish and with a pacing that shifts constantly so you don’t feel rushed to a finish or bored to death. It’s, honestly, a triumph of piano-led indie pop-rock. Every single sound and every single delivery is perfectly in place and, for every moment that veers off the beaten path of pop, it all feels organic.

By sounding so well put together, it’s hard to determine just one defining moment on the release. But second track, ‘Catch Her If You Can’ is a phenomenal steady-paced indie-pop anthem that consists of melody-rich five minutes that feel all too short. It’s a song that, while every section is fantastic, excels based on the strength of its chorus alone. The chorus is flawless, with a singalong backing vocal and a simple but effective lead vocal. It’s a masterclass in pop anthemia.

Pacific have put themselves truly on the map with this. Though EP bookenders ‘Time To Forget’ and ‘Those Nights’ were the lead tracks and are definitely worth listening to, don’t take them as the hallmark of this EP. It’s so much more than those two could begin to do justice.
