Picks Of The Week 12

This week I’ve been on a more consistently ‘indie’ vibe than usual. So naturally, all of this week’s picks of the week are in the indie genre. I apologise for the lack of diversity, but I promise that next week’s selection will be more eclectic!

1. Under China – Auction For The Promise Club

Genre: Indie

Auction For The Promise Club are a great indie band from Cornwall that have a knack for creating a wonderful wall of indie sound that is atmospheric and powerful. ‘Under China‘ is a good example of the band’s trademark sound: both entrancingly beautiful and incredibly powerful, with the Ellie Goulding like vocals of singer Zoe Chambers propelling the song forward. This is definitely one to listen to.

2. Diamonds Like Bricks – Dive Exit

Genre: Indie; Alternative

Dive Exit should feel very privileged indeed: they are the first band to have a song feature more than once on a ‘Pick Of The Week’ (the 2012 round up special is excluded obviously). ‘Diamonds Like Bricks’ is a powerful song with instrumentation that flicks naturally between beautifully gentle and viciously hard-hitting. And in addition to that, the song is so wonderfully crafted that it will get stuck in your head for weeks and may quite possibly stay there! It has done with me at least.

3. Once And For All – Clock Opera

Genre: Indie; Indie-Electronic

Fans of Bastille will love this one. Clock Opera are a great band that know how to craft a great song that delivers lyrics with meaning and instrumentation that is definitely worthy of merit. ‘Once And For All‘ is a great track from the band’s debut album ‘Ways To Forget‘ and is a must-listen for those indie fans who like songs that build slowly into something with a tremendous amount of power behind it.

4. Salamander – Will And The People

Genre: Indie; Ska; Reggae

Will And The People occupy that lovely grey area between indie, reggae and ska that very few bands venture into. With a strong rhythm section and a feel-good vibe, ‘Salamander‘ is a great track from their self-titled debut album and definitely one of the band’s finest tracks. And it’s such a hard song not to like! The band have a great sound with this song, and it’s one that can only lead to good places.

5. Crimes Of Love, Dance & Music – The Control

Genre: Indie

The Control are a great band and ‘Crimes Of Love, Dance & Music’ is a fantastic track to give you a quick taster of what the band are capable of. It’s only a short track, coming in at just under two minutes long, but I like to think of it as a microcosm for the band’s sound. It’s indie with a strong rhythm section that inspires you to dance, while there is also a strong sense of urgency about it that makes you immediately think of punk music. And there’s even a drum fill that would make any metal band proud.
